Birla-Lodha-

M.P Birla Group matriarch Priyamvada Birla died on July 3, 2004 leaving a will that made long time chartered accountant & confidant, R.S.Lodha beneficiary of the entire group’s asset estimated to be over Rs. 50,000 crores. A shocked Birla clan closed ranks and launched a legal battle to oust the outsider. The battle continues…

Taj Corridor-

In its 350th anniversary year(itself a controversy),the Taj Mahal was in news in more ways than one.The Mayawati Government almost put the Taj Mahal in peril by allowing a Taj heritage corridor project on the banks of the Yamuna before backing out on the intervention by the Union Minister for Culture, Jagmohan. 17 crores of public money had already been spent on this controversial project

Kher-Censor-

Veteran actor Anupam Kher was directed by Union Information and Broadcating Ministry to step down as the Censor Board chairman. He was reportedly the target of progressive forces within the UPA govt. which wanted him to quit after the censor board’s action regarding films on the Gujrat Riots[Final Sulution] . Anupam Kher was allegedly called a ‘ RSS’ man to which he took great exception..

Census 2001 : Goof Up-

Census 2001 Report on Religion Data tabulated for the first time with some educational & Economic Statistics released on Sep 6th raised a political storm.The report stated that the Muslim population had risen during the decade 1991 -2001 by 36% as against that for Hindus at 22.7%. After admitting its error the Census commission omitted data for J&K and Assam for 2001.It transpired that the Muslim growth rate had infact fallen from 32.9% in 1981-91 to 29.3% in 1991-2001.

Dalmia Vs BCCI-

The 75th platinum anniversary year of BCCI was mired with controversies, over the election of its President, telecast rights of cricket matches and elevation of Jagmohan Dalmiya as the first Patron-in-chief just before its AGM for the Election process.

Right To Die - Euthanasia-

Kolavennu Venkatesh passed away on December 17, 2004 and part from his eyes left behind a raging debate on the ethical & legal aspects of Euthanasia. Venkastesh a 25 yr old muscular dystrophia patient sought the right to die in order to donate his organs but his plea was rejected by the Andhra Pradesh High Court
